Machete meets a woodchuck

Over the weekend, Machete made a friend at South Oak Park. Sort of. Zach snapped this video of what looks a little like a beaver but we think is actually a woodchuck.

I have only ever seen a woodchuck once before around the park, although, apparently, they are among Missouri’s most common mammals. They can be garden pests, but their large, underground burrows can also provide habitat for other wild animals. Woodchucks are vegetarians, and tend to be active in the late afternoon, which is when Zach snagged this video.

Have you ever met a woodchuck?

About crystalwayward

I live with two formerly wayward dogs. I care deeply about the environment, and I think gardening is a revolutionary act.
